The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod at its national convention in 1998 adopted this definition of stewardship along with eight biblical principles and commended them to the church for use in guiding stewardship education and appeal efforts in congregations and synodical organizations. To learn more about these principles the synod’s Department of Stewardship Ministry has published a Study Guide (S21822) which is very informative and educational.

 

"Stewardship” can evoke strong feelings and reactions amongst our members. Some people, including pastors are afraid to talk or preach about stewardship for fear of offending people who think that the church has financial problems and is always asking for more money. Nothing is further from the truth.

 

As redeemed and sanctified children of God, we desire to live a holy and God-pleasing life dedicated to serving Him in love. Therefore, Christian Stewardship is an act of love whereby we dedicate our lives to God with our time, talents and treasures. We should do this freely and joyfully and not from a sense of guilt. Stewardship programs based on these biblical principles are more successful.
